The process of creating sustainable textiles is simple and quite elemental; all you have to do is replace traditional solutions with enzymatic ones where possible and follow the same procedure - except with elemental textiles it will be quicker and gentler on the environment:
- Bioscour the fabrics to remove the protective pectin layer and impurities, and ease the wetting process
- Bleach at low temperature
- Remove residual hydrogen peroxide and bioblast in the same bath as dyeing
- Biosoap to do the final rinses
Simply perform this process like Novozymes did in collaboration with global textile and apparel manufacturer Esquel. Using the best technology available, we have successfully carried out trials on knitted fabric to test the impact of the enzymatic solutions. A revolutionary result and showcasing of elemental textiles: An elemental t-shirt!
Savings accomplished by elemental_textiles
It is all in the numbers, which you can find in the peer reviewed Life Cycle Assessment. The LCA indicates a possible savings of 70,000-90,000 liters of water and 1 - 1,3 ton CO2 per ton of knitted fabric during the process of creating an elemental t-shirt. It also shows reduced process time of 20-25%. Considering that 9 million tonnes of knitwear is produced every year, it is easy to imagine the difference elemental textiles can make. And that is just the beginning. With elemental textiles we can go a long way in making the textile industry more sustainable, not to mention keeping the environment and fashionistas everywhere happy. It is elemental!
