Enzymes to help protect nature is elemental_

From bioscouring to finishing, you can replace harsh chemicals with Novozymes' all-natural enzymes. That gets you great quality fabrics while you decrease textile production costs. We call this process “elemental textiles” because it is a sustainable win-win solution that helps protect air, water, fire and earth.

The sustainability numbers introduced below refer to the life cycle assessment conducted by Novozymes and validated by a third party.

 water

Elemental textiles can save 70,000-90,000 liters of water for every ton knitwear produced. With approximately 9 million ton of knitwear being produced annually, we would have an additional 630 billion litres of water every year if all knitwear were produced using enzymes. That is drinking water for over 24 million rural Chinese people.

Because nature’s own technology does not pollute, all the chemical wastewater produced by textile processing that runs into waterways is significantly reduced when you replace chemicals with enzymes.

 Air

Processing at lower temperatures and using fewer baths means reduced energy consumption and fewer CO2 emissions. Not to mention fewer polluting and health-damaging particles are released into the air that we breathe.

Every year 9 million tons of knitwear is produced. Saving between 1 and 1,3 ton of carbon emissions for each ton of knitwear produced, elemental textiles can save 9 million tons of CO2 annually. That is equivalent of removing 2 million cars from the road.

 Fire

Two thirds of the world’s energy comes from fossil fuels. Through reduced energy consumption elemental textiles help ensure less coal, oil, and natural gas are going up in flames – and up into the atmosphere.

 Earth

In a world where the ecosystem is under increasing pressure due to crop production, it is good to know that elemental reduces waste of raw materials. Getting more fabric out of the same amount of cotton leaves more land to stay untouched.
